Ask anything! Real Problems! Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile and all viewpoints are respected. People are given a chance to raise their questions and discuss relevant topics in small groups after the talk. Life is full of tough times-shaky employment, relationship struggles, kid troubles and illness. No matter what you are facing, Alpha is a place to ask why – with the freedom to share or just sit back and listen.

What it all about? The Alpha course is an opportunity to explore the validity and relevance of the Christian faith in your life today. It is a practical introduction to the basics of Christianity centered around a eating together, a talk and small group discussion. Each week people meet together, a talk on topics such as the Big Question: GOD! Is there a God? Why am I here? Who is Jesus? What about other religions? Alpha tackles these and other questions each week. Chances are somebody in your group is wondering the same thing you are such as Why Did Jesus Die?, How Can I be Sure of My Faith?, and Does God Still Heal Today?, followed by small group interaction. The weekend retreat, midway through the course, focuses on the person and work of the Holy Spirit. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints - but all come with the same objective: to establish whether Jesus Christ has any real relevance for their lives. The style of Alpha is informal, friendly and non-pressured. No question is treated as too trivial, threatening or illogical. Alpha believes it is possible to learn about the Christian faith and have a lot of fun at the same time. Laughter and fun are a key part of the course, breaking down barriers and enabling everyone to relax together. Helping one another. Building Friendships! Some of the closest and most long lasting friendships have been built on the Alpha course. Alpha friendships get beyond standard, "What is you name and What do you do?" so you connect on a more personal level. On the retreat day, which is a key part of the course, you get to know each other better. The small groups give each person a chance to participate and help each other along the way, as they discuss, study the Bible, and pray for each other. Meeting and eating together give people the chance to get to know each other and to develop Christian relationships Food and Fun! Alpha isn't all work. In fact, most of the time it is simply just fun! Sharing a casual meal and hanging out after a long day can be a time to relax and be yourself - no expectations of strings attached. Alpha changes lives! Over 1.5 million people have taken the Alpha Course in the United States and Canada.

How Much? There is no charge for the Alpha Course. All over the world, the Christian church is experiencing remarkable growth. New shoots of life are springing up giving fresh dynamism, hope and vision. Alpha is one of these shoots. Thousands of Alpha courses are now running in many countries. Hundreds more register each month as church leaders from all denominations report the astonishing impact the course has on non-churchgoers and existing Christians in their areas and it is spreading fast to many secular locations - prisons, businesses and schools. Alpha was developed at Holy Trinity Brompton, an Anglican church in London, England. Alpha is a course for all the Church and aims to present the core truths of the Christian faith around which Christians of every major denomination can unite. The Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, Rev'd Prebendary J A K Millar said, "Questions about God have fascinated human beings since time began. Many men and women today experience a very real sense of spiritual hunger without having any contact with a church. One of the most frustrating aspects of church life, until recently, has been our ineffectiveness in reaching people with this hunger and getting them within the sound of the gospel. We have longed to find a way of enabling them to discover the liberating, life-changing power of God, revealed in His son Jesus Christ through His Holy Spirit, in a way that allows them to explore in an unthreatening atmosphere of love and acceptance. Until recently they have been hard to interest. This, I think, is one of the reasons why the Alpha course has proved to be so popular in such a wide variety of countries and cultures. The issues are clearly put and the claims of Christ examined all in the company of other searchers. By taking account of literally thousands of questionnaires, the Alpha course has been adapted and improved so that it is truly molded to the perceived and experienced needs of this generation. Stripping the gospel down to its bare essentials, it makes Christianity accessible to men and women of today's culture. It is not, of course, simply hard work that has brought about the growth of Alpha - although there has been plenty of that. The teaching and the experience of the Holy Spirit have brought the course to life from beginning to end. Hunger is created in the hearts for the reality of God. The Spirit alone can satisfy that hunger, but by revealing the reality of the power of Jesus Christ to forgive, release, empower and equip, many people have found the reality of God's love and become committed to Jesus Christ."

So how did Alpha get started? It's friends bringing friends! The Alpha course has been running for twenty years, but it was only in 1993 that its astonishing possibilities as a vehicle for evangelism began to emerge. Twenty years ago, Charles Marnham, a clergyman at Holy Trinity Brompton, London, began looking for a means of presenting the basic principles of the Christian faith to new Christians in a relaxed and informal setting. He devised the Alpha Course. By the time Nicky Gumbel took over Alpha in 1990, the course was a central feature of the church's life. Today the number of participants regularly total around 1000 people on each course. Nicky Gumbel explains: "It's all friendship-based. There's no knocking on doors - it's friends bringing friends." Alpha is for everyone and everyone is welcome on an Alpha course. People attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any point to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Still others may have attended church on and off all their lives but feel they have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith.
